@Chevy Chase Elementary School
Shad Club
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
8:10-855am & 3:40-4:40pm

Shad club is an environmental club focused on the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.  Students will learn about water quality targets and the effects of different elements on freshwater quality.  We’ll be testing pH, salinity, nitrate levels, and ammonia levels.  We’ll also learn about the life cycle of the shad and the food webs that they are a part of.  We’ll view an eagle cam from Cambridge, MD and watch eaglets grow into more mature birds… LIVE!  Finally, (drum roll please) we’ll raise and release thousands of our own shad to release into the Potomac.  We’ll study the development of these little eggs for five days, from tiny little dots to squirmy little fish.  It’s an amazing club for kids who have interest in science, the environment, and plain old fun!  (Please note: STUDENTS MUST HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SHAD RELEASE.)

Preliminary meetings(which don’t change) will be  April 26 8:10 – 8:55 a.m.  & April 27 8:10-8:55p.m.
Next set of meetings are Monday, April 30, 8:10 – 8:55 a.m. AND 3:40-4:40
Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and  May 3, 8:10 – 8:55 a.m. Friday, May 4, 8:10 – 8:55 a.m. AND 3:40 until approximately 5:30 (The release will most likely be scheduled for 4:30 and will last approximately 30-60 minutes.

Participants will leave CCES at 3:40 and parents of the children in the club will need to drive their children to Bladensburg or Potomac (tbd).  NOTE:  THE DATES LISTED ARE DEPENDENT UPON SHAD EGG AVAILABILITY.  IF SHAD ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO BE SHIPPED FOR DELIVERY ON APRIL 29, THEN THE CLUB WILL BE DELAYED BY ONE WEEK, TO THE WEEK OF April 30.  IF THE CLUB IS POSTPONED, FAMILIES WILL BE NOTIFIED VIA EMAIL ON APRIL 28/29.
